When I paint on canvas, I usually choose a square for my abstract art because it does not suggest a vision of this world. Go horizontal, and landscapes start to emerge. Go vertical and trees or other plants begin to take shape. Of course, it is not compulsory to turn a horizontal or vertical into some recognizable image, but I find it more likely to happen.
I am beginning to paint on new canvases, size 30" x 40", using them vertically. I haven't done this in a while on canvas, so I'm wondering what will emerge. Here are some older vertical paintings:
Blue Woods, 18" x 24" acrylic on canvas
BLUE WOODS barely suggests a woods with its simple strokes.
Things We Don't See, 18" x 24" acrylic on canvas.
THINGS WE DON'T SEE honors the vertical shape without succumbing to representation. I'll see what I come up with in my next painting sessions.
